About Us

China Study Centre

Pakistan has a longstanding relationship with People's Republic of China, as Pakistan was the first country to recognize it. Over the time, strategic and economic relationship between both the countries have been strengthening through various joint projects, with China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) being an exemplary project. CPEC is China's 15-years old, $62 billion investment in Pakistan. Moreover, the flagship project of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) took five-decade long strategic alliance between the two countries to the economic sphere in 2015. CPEC is best seen as an economic peg in terms of broader strategic relationship between both the countries.

The China Study Centre (CSC), at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, was established on July 1st, 2021. CSC has been set up through the undue financial, technical and professional support of Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

The CSC plans to strengthen the people to people contact between Pakistan and People's Republic of China through exchange programs, joint research projects with Chinese universities, research grants and cultural events. Through these joint research projects with our Chinese counterparts, the Centre aims to enhance inter-university academic collaboration between China and Pakistan. CSC is established with the sole purpose of nourishing and reinforcing the economic, social, and geopolitical relationship between the two countries. It focuses on myriad research areas with a special focus on the Business, Agricultural and Geopolitical cooperation between Pakistan and China under CPEC.

Furthermore, CSC also focuses at enhancing theoretical as well as practical contribution for industries and policy makers through extensive practice-based research. The Centre hopefully will become an epicenter of Pak-China cooperation.

When it comes to China, there would be undoubtedly a unanimous agreement, on the fact that it possess the world's largest economy (according to the Purchasing Power Parity). From being a country with a very inefficient and stagnant economy, China has now emerged out to be the world's most fast-growing economy. The World Bank further describes it as "the fastest sustained expansion by a major economy in history". It is due to this sustained growth that China has been able to reduce its poverty rate by uplifting around 800 million people out of the poverty line.

Talking about Pak-China relations, Pakistan has stood with China from the very start; from being the first country to officially recognize the People's Republic of China till this day, by developing and nurturing a very deep bond and friendship with China. Both the countries have established strong partnerships pertaining to mutual peace, prosperity and development in both the regions. This friendship or "Pak-Cheen Dosti" is not and should not be just limited to states, but also needs to be extended towards both countries' nation as well. The China Study Centre (CSC), IBA Karachi has been established to set the ground and to be one of the pioneers in bridging the gap between the people of both the countries.

We at CSC, IBA Karachi aim to further facilitate Pak-China relations by creating awareness about the Chinese culture amongst the students. We aim to conduct joint research projects with our Chinese counterparts and China-focused activities pertaining to Economical, Political, Educational, Technological and many other domains. The Centre looks forward to exploring new avenues of collaboration, networking and connecting with our Chinese friends over the border. Furthermore, we also have objectives regarding creating awareness about Chinese culture, language and society amongst the Pakistani student body and inculcating and promoting Pak-China friendship.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the best example out there that depicts and further strengthens the bilateral relations and friendship between the two countries and their respective nation. Under this project, a number of developmental initiatives and activities have been launched. CSC, IBA Karachi would focus on CPEC and its implications for both the involved parties and the region. Research projects, Conferences, Events and much more would be done to identify and explore new areas of activities of developmental gaps pertaining to CPEC. We aim to work as an academic think tank to achieve mutual benefits for both the countries, Pakistan and China.
